abstract

This is a speed research and qualitative study about how the NoVA community members have experienced their studies and career during the Coronavirus pandemic and restrictions. The need for this study was found from the lack of live and regular discussions with your colleagues in the NoVA community. The data was collected by using an online questionnaire and analysed with a method of thematic analysis. Each informant created fro themselves a nickname to protect their anonymity. The study was made inside of the three days in the April 2020 by one of the NoVA community member who also participated the study. The findings prove that the Corona virus restrictions have made many changes in the informants’ studies and career, and mental, physical and financial support are seen as the main needs of arts and cultural workers work in the post-Corona time.

Speed research is a study method that NoVA students 2018-2020 learner from Anette Göthlund, NoVA professor from Konstfack – University of Arts, Crafts and Design. Speed research is playful and quick way to investigate research potential of the chosen topic.

healing-homezoner

It is really difficult to concentrate and focus to get the writing and studying done. Even though I am not pulled away by going to work or traveling to and from places my heart is heavy and my mind is full. Thankfully, I am writing about hopeful and positive things. 🙂

Survivor

I have to spend whole day in front of my computer screen! Every study or work related communication with other humans are happening through the screen. I have more responsibilities and tasks thank to Coronavirus.

work ergonomics-holic

I miss the campus. I think that getting enough paid jobs is super difficult now and it will be even more difficult in the future.

The virus left me without a job, but I took the change to focus on my studies -ergo, my thesis. Plenty to write, plenty to work on.

Fluffy

It makes me more focused on my studies.

Flowing

On the one hand, I am free from time and place to attend classes, because all of the school classes and meetings are organised in the online environment. I spend my time more on theoretical study than practical bodily works.

3 What kind of is arts and culture utopia after Coronavirus?
healing-homezoner

My hope is that it allows us to really push our creativity and becomes an opportunity to reassess what is important and create a new sense of ‘normal’.

Survivor

My utopia is about rethinking the accessibility and working spaces: I see shared working spaces, like co-working spaces, between various arts and cultural organizations and more collaboration.

Work ergonomics-holic

We don’t need to fight anymore the value position of arts and culture in the society – arts and culture are seen as valued part of everyday life. People will spend a part of their savings for arts and culture experiences in the post-Corona time.

The Blender Girl

It is clear that workers in the arts and culture field are integrated as regular workers, and the arts and culture field is interacting more with other fields.

Fluffy

It will be more acknowledged by societies.

Flowing

Art and cultural organisations will support artist more at the local level. It can organically help each other. But also, at the same time, technological development has improved both to create and share arts works, so that there will be more diversity in the art creation and it will spread globally through online platforms.

Claws of the Red Dragon

Arts and culture support human beings just as the invisible, unknown threats in the opposite direction, we should invest and value it more.

analysis

The analysis was made by applying a method of thematic analysis. Thematic analysis is a method that aims to identify the essential topics or themes forming the data. Chosen themes recur in data in one from or another. (Jyväskylä University, 2020) The questionnaire was sent for 13 NoVA community members and seven of them reply on it inside given time frame.

The five themes were found from the data:

1) Changed focus on Master’s theses project and jobs

2) Sense of value raise of arts and culture in the post-Corona time

3) Collegial support emphasising self-reflection and self-activity

4) University’s ability to listen its users’ needs

5) Arts and culture empowering through making art yourself and surrounding yourself with different art forms

conclusions

This speed research proves that investigating the one topic inside of a short period, in this case only three days, it is possible to find relevant and useful information about the topic. Findings of this study aren’t applicable in the wider context because of the small sample but the findings give knowledge about the current situation and future needs of some arts and cultural workers.

The findings show that need of mental, physical and financial support are major for informants in the future. Also interacting with arts and cultural acts yourself is crucial part of informants wellbeing. I want to challenge the reader to think how they can support arts and culture now and in the future.
